Sit either inside the Hall or outside in the churchyard, becoming aware of the rhythm of your breathing, being present to the presence of God; or walk through the water meadows, either towards Chichester Harbour or beside the stream to the village with its duck-pond and high reeds.
“And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed” (Genesis 2:8).
Jesus said: “See how the lilies of the field grow . . . Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these” (Matthew 6:28)
Recently, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware (patron, Quiet Garden Movement) said: during silent times “simply sit, or walk slowly. Let the feeling of the place sink in. Stop. Look. Listen. Be present where you are. Listen to the wind in the leaves of the trees. Listen to the sound of the birds, or perhaps little animals or insects moving among the grass. Then listen to the silence beyond those sounds. Don’t be afraid. Don’t feel it is making a demand on you. Just be open to it. Let it speak to you. Just be present where you are”.
