Garden Description:

St John’s Outdoor Sacred Spaces: On Our Labyrinths and In Our Quiet Garden, Church Gardens and Heritage Cemetery

As spring and summer break forth in blossom and bloom once more, we at St John’s are reminded of the natural beauty which surrounds our heritage church and cemetery and of the many visitors who come to us for the solace and peace our labyrinths, gardens and cemetery provide. These remain an important aspect of our Community Outreach as well as serving our own parishioners.

The original quiet garden was designed by parishioner Vince Vaughan, who has since passed. The donation of two granite benches allows visitors to sit in a shady nook, listen to the birds, and find peace. His widow, Shelagh, welcomes a renewed interest in the publicizing and maintenance of the garden. Parishioner Sandy Bason, organizes and implements most of our gardens’ planting and maintenance yearly.

Our outdoor and indoor labyrinths continue to be used for various activities, workshops and walks. The location adjacent to the cemetery, the surrounding benches and gardens have made it a place of contemplation, prayer and spiritual healing for many in the greater community. A “Way of The Cross” walk and church vigil was held in the hall on Good Friday. In addition, our outdoor labyrinth has been featured in an article written for a local organization promoting the greening of faith spaces- “Faith and the Common Good.”

A fund has been established to construct a gazebo to provide additional seating and shade for visitors to the garden, cemetery and labyrinth. Once sufficient funds are raised, designs and options can be considered.

The garden and labyrinth is located adjacent to the church cemetery. St. John's Anglican Church is located on Sandhill Road, in the community of Kanata Ontario, environs City of Ottawa, Capital of Canad
