The area is cared for by the Community at St. Gertrude’s Monastery in central Idaho. Visitors may walk the trail following Stations of the Cross ending at the Monastery cemetery. The trail continues up about 500 feet in elevation to the top of the hill. Here open meadows afford sweeping views of the Camas Prairie and distant mountain peaks. A loop trail descends about 2 miles in total through forest back to the Monastery. In keeping with their Philosophy of Land Use, the Sisters of St. Gertrude’s steward this forest to provide a contemplative space, keeping in mind that the atmosphere of peace and prayerfulness provided by these surroundings is to be shared with all who come to seek quiet and God. In addition to the trails, visitors may stop at the grotto chapel, or rest under trees in the memorial garden. St. Gertrude’s Monastery campus is also home to the award-winning Central Idaho Historical Museum, Spirit Center retreat facility, and the Inn at St. Gertrude’s.
